Grade 12 English- Should It Be Mandatory?

         As grade 12 English has become a requirement for every single university program out there, it has raised the very controversial question of whether or not this course should be mandatory when applying to post secondary schools. Some may argue that it only comes to use to those in English- related programs, however this course may be more useful than you think. 

        English class is more than just practicing reading, grammar rules, etc. It forces us to develop our communication skills which is crucial in everyday life. I can guarantee you that in one way or another everybody will be in a position where these English skills are very important. This could be through writing an essay, email and even oral communication. 

        When it comes to university programs, even if you are in a program that is not English based, for example Engineering or Architecture, it will still be required of you to write a lab report or essay. Since it is already assumed that you know how to write an essay or lab the professors will not teach you how. If you do not, that is a big chunk of your mark being sacrificed. Therefore no matter what university program you will need to use your skills your developed in English class through grade 9 to 12. 

       Not only is English class important for post secondary, it is also important for everyday life. Look at your job for example. Most jobs require oral communication by talking to customers/ guests. It doesn't matter if you are a business man or work part time at McDonald's, elements of ENG4U will come in great use.  I work at a gym and as the first person people talk to when entering the club, I must act and sound professional. However I would be unable to do this with underdeveloped English skills as it would give people a negative impression of the fitness club. At work I may have to send emails and take phone calls as well, which require sufficient writing, grammar and listening skills. 

       In conclusion, English skills are one of the most practical skills to have in life, and can take you very far in all aspects such as schooling, work and even socially. This is why it should be necessary to take grade 12 English as it allows us to further expand our knowledge and strengths, allowing us to succeed further in this world. So next time you ask yourself  " Why am I even in this class anyways ? " remember that although it may not seem like it, you are doing yourself a favor!
